Melissa Lauren: “Two Tours in One” Tour

Toronto Songstress, Melissa Lauren embarks on multi-genred Western Canada tour, rotating two very different stage shows.

Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, May  2019

When singer and songwriter Melissa Lauren initially started booking her fourth tour of Western Canada, she went about contacting her usual jazz societies , presenters and clubs.  The plan was to do her usual concoction of jazz and blues mixed in with some swing and blues, each gently crossing over into each other.   Then a saucy thought: why not keep the genres separate, and prepare two shows a little purer in style.?

“As an artist that is working on crossing over into pop genres, I often worry before a show,” “what if my repertoire is too jazz for the ‘non-jazzers’, and too pop for the jazz purists?” “  Not to mention the varying expectations of the bookers and presenters.”

Melissa decided to split the tour in two: half the shows would be labeled as “jazz “ and be in a quartet/quintet format, the other half guitar/voice duo, showcasing originals and her own brand of folk, pop, country and do-wop.

The real excitement began when the fairly new mom was invited  to join the roster of “Side Door Access.”  Vancouver’s own Juno-winning  Dan Mangan’s house concert booking company.  Jokingly referred to as “tinder for musicians”, the already warmly received company connects people with venues  that are interested in hosting concerts with artists on tour.   Side Door Access has hosted some of Canaada’s finest songwriters and bands including Broken Social Scene,  Justin Rutledge, and The Goodlovelies.

“ If I am leaving my daughter (3) for ten days, I need to feel a sense of community, of home.  Side Door access shows are magical that way, I have attended a few myself as an audience member! “

The two stage shows will be scattered across Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC, with venues ranging from high end jazz clubs, to breweries, to living rooms.

Melissa will be using local bassist, drummers and saxophonists for the jazz shows.   Nathan Hiltz, her husband and guitarist,  will be providing the chords on all shows.  Hiltz is luckily a “Humber jazz guy well versed in other genres!”

The repertoire can be expected to  range from originals off of Lauren’s two studio albums, as well as jazz and blues standards, and covers of artists such as Prince, Willie Nelson, Sinead O’Conner, Leonard Cohen,  Bob Marley, and Alessia Cara.
